| Location Come and experience the joys of Plymouth, the historic coastal city in the glorious south west of England. This thriving modern city, historic seafaring port and holiday centre has something for everyone. When you want to escape the bustle and find a little peace and quiet, Plymouth is the perfect place to be. If you want a little more action, there's something here for you too.
With a unique waterfront ambience and its spirit of the sea, Plymouth encompasses great local and international cuisine and superb entertainment available, with theatres, art galleries, ice rink and swimming pools. The town has all-weather activities throughout the year. There's even a dry-ski slope should you feel the urge for some piste action!
You can venture into the Barbican, the oldest part of Plymouth, where in 1620 the Pilgrim Fathers set sail from the Mayflower Steps on their historic voyage to Massachusetts, North America to found the new world, or the Hoe where Sir Francis Drake cut short his game of bowls to fight the Spanish Armada.
Plymouth embraces all things marine, from National powerboat racing and sailing to being the home of the National Marine Aquarium. The surrounding countryside of the Dartmoor National Park and Cornwall is some of the most spectacular Britain has to offer.
Once upon a time, seafarers set sail from the Barbican Maritime Village, the ancient heart of the city around the old Sutton Harbour returning with fantastic tales and fabulous goods, from all corners of the globe. Walk the ancient cobbled streets and quaysides, packed with new café bars and restaurants and soak up a distinctively cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Follow in the footsteps of such famous captains as Drake and Raleigh and today your exotic booty could come from the dozens of speciality shops, galleries and craft workshops tucked away amidst the old port buildings. Plymouth, with its great natural harbour, is made for those who love the great outdoors; and of course for good, old-fashioned fun, nothing beats a sunny day on the beach, the choice of secluded coves including Jennycliff, Bovisand and Mothercombe.
There's certainly plenty to see in Plymouth:
- National Maritime Aquarium
- Fish Market
- New visitor centre with crafts and exhibitions
- Plymouth Dome - a great reconstruction of Plymouth streets
- City Museum & Art Gallery,
- Drakes Circus drawings and painting collection
- Royal Citadel with its entrance gateway and military buildings,
- Crownhill Fort
- Plymouth Sound and Drakes Island
- Seamton's Tower, with the old Eddystone Lighthouse which was rebuilt in 1881
- Eggbuckland, once a rural village, but now very much part of the city of Plymouth
- Antony House, an 18th century house run by the National Trust
- Bath Pond House
- Merchants House
- Black Friars Distillery - the makers of the famous Plymouth gin
Climate
