TEFL Videos - Other Jobs in the TEFL/TESOL Industry
This is what one of our TEFL graduates feels he has gained from the course, or a part of it, and how he plans to put into action what he has learned.
There are 2 receptive skills: reading and listening. We do it for 2 reasons: entertainment or for a purpose. We may read and listen for a variety of reasons: predicting a headline, skimming an article, scanning for specific info, reading for details, or deduce info from the material. There are some things to be aware of when teaching these skills. One is that it may be necessary to pre-teach certain vocab to help understanding. Another is choosing texts wisely– authentic texts give students confidence but should be carefully chosen so students do not focus on what they do not know. One of the best ways to introduce learners to English is to talk to them about the basic parts of speech that make up a simple sentence. By analyzing each word, the learner understands their role in the sentence and how they should be positioned. The student could then practice forming sentences from simple ones to more complicated ones. Teachers should stress that each part of speech could have more than one variant and could be used in different ways with other parts of speech. In my experience, emphasizing the practical use of these variants will make them more memorable to students.
