TEFL Videos - What's the difference between online courses, in-class courses and combined courses?
This is what one of our TEFL graduates feels he has gained from the course, or a part of it, and how he plans to put into action what he has learned.
The receptive skills, reading and listening, are equally important to the use a language as a re the productive skills. Reading is often easier for learners, as they are able to re-read the passages multiple times. This is often not the case with listening. This unit provided helpful techniques for working through problems that may arise when teaching receptive skills. These include pre-teaching vocabulary, choosing interesting texts, creating interest in the text for all the class, varying the materials from class to class, and having realistic expectations when assessing comprehension.Unit 18 summed up a few grammar topics that are usually taught at language schools. Modal verbs are introduced fairly early, but it takes a while to get all the shades of their meanings. We also looked at passive voice, which is a fairly advanced topic. The topic of relative clauses is often not discussed at all, unfortunately, which created difficulties for students when they have to punctuate a longer sentence. Phrasal verbs are very particular and need to be introduced gradually, since their meaning is frequently impossible to guess and students really need to get used to the concept.
