TEFL Videos - What is an ESL teacher?
This is what one of our TEFL graduates feels he has gained from the course, or a part of it, and how he plans to put into action what he has learned.
This unit covered the structure of a basic sentence. It included explanations and examples of the main grammatical parts of a sentence. I reviewed parts I was already familiar with such as nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, articles, conjunctions and prepositions. I also received a needed refresher on those concepts I haven't focused on for a few years such as transitive and intransitive verbs, past participle and present participle, and Gerunds. All of the examples given were helpful to fully understand, and makes me realize I will need lots of simple examples to use while I'm teaching.Knowing what language level and age one is most comfortable with, makes teaching that much easier and enjoyable. Knowing how to interact with a class (and on a 1 on 1 basis as needed) is important. Learners of different levels and age act quite differently and what might be able to motivate 1 group differs from what it will take to motivate another. Being flexible and creative in the way which you part your knowledge, will help them understand, absorb, learn and retain what was taught. Having a passion for helping others learn, and seeing the progress of it, is rewarding in its own right.
