TEFL Videos - What questions should I ask a TEFL employer?
This is what one of our TEFL graduates feels he has gained from the course, or a part of it, and how he plans to put into action what he has learned.
Unit 3 began by discussing the strengths and weaknesses of different English teaching methodologies. Additionally, the unit described which methodologies were favored in the past, as opposed to ones that are more favored presently. The text informed me that deciding which teaching style is best to implement in one's classroom will heavily depend on individual circumstance, such as personality and the culture of the students. An effective learning environment will have most likely have a combination of teaching methodologies that will address the learning needs of the students in the classroom. After discussing the different methodologies of English education, the unit text went on to elaborate on the concept of Engage, Study, and Activate. All three parts of E.S.A serve very different, but equally important functions in English education. Depending on the individual circumstance of a classroom, the most effective way to approach E.S.A. could be in a Boomerang or Patchwork lesson form, rather than the Straight Arrow approach. Next, the unit text gave many examples of different activities that an instructor could apply for each stage of E.S.A. Lastly, unit 3 discussed the importance of giving feedback and corrections, while also elaborating on the appropriate methods and times that an instructor should provide them. For example, corrections should be very limited during the engage phase, and often times, should be driven by student self-correction. Likewise, feedback is a very essential tool to English learning, but it should almost always be positive feedback, so that the student feels comfortable in the classroom environment, as well as the subject material.
