This unit was very helpful to point out the importance of engaging the students to acquire the skills needed for all four communication elements – reading, listening, speaking, and writing. It seems that much education today, regardless of it being native language or otherwise, omits one or more of the elements in order to focus primarily on the preference of the teacher. I am likely subject to making this same mistake and so I will purpose to ensure that my students are getting a good dose of all four in each lesson. Further, the breakdown of the five major ways in which we read and listen, was very helpful. I am already thinking of ways in which I can encourage my students to develop strong abilities in all five ways so that they are prepared to engage English at all levels, with it culminating in their ability to predict a point or conclusion which is only being inferred in the text, or which is not revealed until much later.
