This lesson allows an opportunity to observe a real class session. In the first video the teacher does not connect with the students well before beginning his teaching. Therefore there is not a good rapport established at the outset of the class, which could lead to the students feeling more intimidated and reluctant to speak during the engage phase. He speaks very rapidly and does not give clear instructions or context to some of the exercises. In the second lesson, the teacher begins by introducing himself and learning the names of all the students. He is also more deliberate about describing the exercises so that the students understand how to participate and speak up with more confidence. The videos help to see how important it is for a teacher to be engaged with the students and to give clear directions and information about the lesson, so that the students can learn the lesson and participate better in the various phases of the ESA lesson activities.
