Receptive skills are a very important part of learning a language. Receptive skills are reading and listening and are how we begin to learn a language. There are many reasons for reading and listening, but almost all of those reasons are either for a purpose or for entertainment. When helping students develop these receptive skills it is important to pick topics of interest for them which can lead to reading and listening for both a purpose and for entertainment. The selection of text is important as too high a level may discourage students and too easy a level will not challenge them. Reading and listening comprehension are the first steps to language communication and is how we learn how to use language by example. Even when focusing on receptive skills, it does not mean that productive skills are not involved. In fact, it is best if all skills can be included in a lesson.
