We are entering the third decade of the twenty first century. This is a century of globalization and multilingualism; not only is it a century of a high technological knowledge but also a century of language competence and intercultural comprehension and collaboration. All that is not a luxury – it yields hilarious possibilities to a more rapid development and progress of the independent countries. A growing number of people worldwide are getting more conscious and aware of the necessity of mastering at least one foreign language. A dominating majority of Europeans (84 %), for instance, consider that everyone in the Europe should be able to master at least the English language. But why exactly English? What is the actual main reason of why choosing English as the preferred language? English is getting and becoming exceedingly popular, because it is flexible in use; it has clear grammar rules and has a broad adaptability. English is a worldwide spread language. Books, magazines, newspapers and all other written materials, around 85 %, are written in English. It is the most common language in science since approximately 95 % of scientific articles are written in English, according to a research made in 1997. All those characteristics of English make it possess an unambiguous advantage to other languages. Nowadays, in times of global digitalization, English is most frequently used in the worldwide web. The access of information through using the Internet is almost not feasible to do without the use of English. Moreover, every fifth individual on the planet can communicate in English, which makes it serve as a “ticket” to the world, as well as the most utilized communication media while traveling. Furthermore, efficient exterior politics may be conducted and becomes a reality if people use the most essential and rudimentary tool – the mastering of foreign languages and foremost English. It is one of the official languages of the Organization of the United Nations, NATO and the European union. It is the official language of 53 countries around the world. English has been the most commonly used language since the mid of twentieth century and is today the most spoken one! Learning English opens the opportunity to participate in society or on the international arena where diverse languages and cultural environment is inevitable. People knowing English can transfer messages of their own society within the global world. Folks are being enriched with new, more diverse viewpoints and start seeing the society they belong to from a different angle or perspective. 61 % of people living in the European union trust that, through mastering English, it would be more disposable and easier for them to find a job abroad. Therefore, the chances of those knowing and mastering English are far more immense compared to those who do not master English well or not at all. The latter group would usually find work more difficult and that is frequently non-qualified job vacancies. Mastering a foreign language in general, and in particular English as a world language, is a huge help in achieving the future career objectives of many young people. An international poll displays that 80 % of those young individuals assert that English rises them to a level that enables them to become flexible enough and adaptive in dynamic situations. And these qualities are especially useful in professional life of our contemporary world. It is even evidenced that students learning English have a level of over average skills in IT, in comparison to the rest of people who do not speak or write English. Global languages are literally uniting the world and using them lead to a durable and sustainable globality and social proximity. This is to highest extent valid for the most worldwide used language – English. It is maintaining the link and the connection between the various societies and is also the most used language in international business. Furthermore, English is the language of science, cross-border communications, the social media, technology, culture and even the modern music which English is a vital part of; that is English has a tremendous practical implication and implementation in all aspects of life for an enormous amount of people and communities worldwide. The adaptability of English is a fact that has made this entire language so vast and popular throughout our planet. It has retained words from a variety of other languages and cultures, and those have become an aggregate part of it. For example, there are a plenty of German, Greek, Latin and French words in English. For a millennium so far, the vocabulary of the English language has doubled in quantity and today there are 1 020 000 words in English. Annually this wonderful language is a host and integrates approximately 8500 new words. For the latest 63 years, the vocabulary reserve of English has grown with 70 %. Almost half of the novice words are part of spoken English and they are not included in any formal dictionary. Nevertheless, they are fruits of social communication, results of migration of people across the world and this enhanced vocabulary continuously take part in people’s communication. The speed and depth of English becoming global language are incredible! The communication among cultures is becoming a key skill in the global world and the growth and acknowledgement of English will be getting even more important as time passes by. English can certainly change human fates and even become an inevitable part of their lives. It may guarantee the ability of the diverse nations to communicate with each other and to increase the national well-being of each of them. Led by love to children, and the English language, I would like to teach and transfer the English language’s abundance and profusion toward (young) people. I will do my best for my students to become steadily better in mastering the English language which will open new horizons to every and each of them and will indeed secure countless of possibilities in today’s globalizing Earth.
