In order for teachers to manage a disciplined classroom it is crucial for teachers to be proficient and to maintain order in the classroom. Teachers today are expected to analyse student behavior in the classroom, thereby creating a safe and nurturing environment where effective teaching and learning can take place. Discipline is an ongoing process in the classroom that teachers deal with on an everyday basis. The ultimate goal at the end of the day is for students to understand their own behavior, take responsibility for their actions and learn from their mistakes. It is important for learners to understand the rules and expectations of the classroom and thereby students are more likely to respect and follow the classroom rules. Students can also be included when it comes to establishing the rules of the classroom, this way the students feel like they have an input and their opinion is important and valued by the teacher. Implementing positive student-teacher relationships contributes to a well-disciplined classroom. Teachers with positive attitudes are likely to have students with positive attitudes. Most of the discipline problems that occur in the classroom are related to poor planning and preparation by the teacher. Teachers who do not plan their lessons have less control over their learners. Learners usually misbehave in the classroom because they are bored. Enable for the student to make decisions and solve his or her own problems, the teacher needs to give the student the opportunity to think, act, take responsibility and accept the consequences for his or her actions. The best way for the teacher to go about doing this is to have a quiet conversation with the individual and not call the student out in front of the whole class regarding their misbehavior. The teacher should use appropriate language when speaking to the individual and avoid sarcasm. The teacher should also keep in mind how he or she would like to be treated by their students and use that as a guideline when working with students. Developing mutual respect in the classroom between the student and the teacher is of great importance when aiming to establish good student-teacher relationships. It is also necessary for the teacher to strengthen his or her relationship with the parents of your students and other support structures. In this way student behavior can be attended to at an earlier stage. Teachers need to consider the changing needs of their students and essentially work closely with colleagues to share strategies and techniques that have worked in the past from previous experiences with certain misbehavior. The most important thing to keep in consideration when thinking of the appropriate consequence to a student’s misbehavior is that there should be a logical connection between the misbehavior and its consequence. Students should also be made aware of the consequences of certain misbehavior that takes place in the classroom. This way these consequences doesn’t come as a surprise to the student. Teachers should then be consistent when it comes to these consequences so that these consequences are being taken seriously by the students. To ensure a smooth learning environment for academic achievement it is critical to establish effective discipline practices.
