In this unit I learned that pronunciation is the most neglected aspect of English language teaching. Nowadays, it is seldom taught at school. In Intonation part I learned that there is a rise or fall pattern to consider. When you finished what you say the intonation falls. When the pattern is flat, it indicates that it doesn't really have that much to say. Also, I learned Techniques for indicating and teaching intonation such as Nonsense words which is just pure noise that can be use to practice conveying attitude, then Gesture by using your hands like sweeping it up or down to show directions, then by Humming or Singing out sentences to hear the stress and intonation, lastly, by using straight or angled arrows on the board to emphasize the point being made and the direction of the intonation. About stress, which is much easier area for the student where it doesn't change in most cases. The students only need is to learn the correct part of a word to stress. There are also techniques for indicating and teaching stress such as Contrastive stress where it stresses on a syllable by saying it correctly, also by Gesture like clapping, clicking fingers, etc., and by Choral work where by just chanting or singing rhythms of English, then The board where it underlines the word and stress marks. There are also teaching techniques for the pronunciation of individual sounds such as peer dictation where students work in pairs. one student speak the word and the other write it down. This is an effective way for them to analyze pronunciation. Next is Your own mouth where students watch what their mouth is doing. Then, Visuals by just drawing a diagram of the mouth how a particular sound is made. Then the Phonemes where symbols are used that can be introduced to help the class note down problems. Lastly, Tongue twister. Teachers must decide when to teach pronunciation because some teachers like to teach for a whole lesson, While some prefer lesson slots and others prefer to teach pronunciation as and when required.
