Dealing with Phonetics is a difficult challenge even for Native speakers, especially as the use of the IPA is not a natural instinct to use it, or instantly pull together the sounds. However, I can see it being of benefit to advanced learners of English when self learning. For beginners though, I would feel its to not use the IPA especially with younger children. In this case, I think it would be best to use choral drills and mouth diagrams, and just teach contextual pronunciation and letter/sound rules to simplify things for younger children. Pronunciation is key aspect for language learning and should be a focus, but should not overrule accuracy or fluency, the 3 aspects of the language need to work together, and should be involved in lessons directly and integrated into other core lessons e.g having pronunciation drills & activities during all lessons as apposed to specialist sessions.
