First Conditional Practice

  This is the second part of Linda’s video journal of her 120-hour TEFL course with ITTT. In this TEFL review video Linda has just finished unit 2 of the course. This unit covers parts of speech and is the first grammar related unit in the course. While unit 2 is a little longer than unit 1 she found that it was not too much work for her to cope with. We have to remember that these activities will be used in the activate stage of your lesson. Here, the focus will be on building fluency and using the language in a bit more of a free-flowing way yet still focusing on that class' language point.   The next example of a game that we can adapt very easily for classroom use is the game of Jeopardy and in this particular game, what we can do is to have a set of levels for our questions, I'd say one through five, where one is going to be the easiest example and five is going to be the most difficult and then, in each of these sets of boxes, we can have various grammar points, such as tenses, perhaps modals, vocabulary and maybe even conditionals. In the same way that we would expect our surgeon, dentist or airline pilot to have undertaken some training, our students of English might also expect their teachers to be trained and competent. What does it mean that our English teacher is competent? Possibly there are two major components to the answer: 1. The teacher has adequate subject knowledge. 2. ESL students whose first language is Italian certainly have many advantages over some students who speak languages less closely related to English.
