TEFL Videos - How do I get a job teaching English in Thailand?
This is what one of our TEFL graduates feels he has gained from the course, or a part of it, and how he plans to put into action what he has learned.
Seeing the difference between the teacher and student attitudes in both videos was astounding. Trying to get through the first lesson video was slightly painful, to be honest, due to the attitude of the teacher and the clear discomfort of the students. I have been in similar classroom situations where the teacher claims the material is easy to understand, which only makes a student more reluctant to participate if he or she has any hesitations. The second video certainly redeemed this, however, as there was such a shift and I could feel the warmth and engagement in the classroom attitude.Unit 20, Troubleshooting, lists common problem situations and how to deal with them. It provides techniques and suggestions for teachers faced with first lessons, students lacking motivation (Warmers), classes composed of students at different levels, large classes, students using native language, reluctant students, and students having difficulties with listening texts. Studying this unit helped me to realize that a solution exists for each of the above-mentioned problem situations as long as the teacher makes good use of the 'toolbox' (techniques and suggestions) provided in this unit.
