English is a worldwide language.People come from all over the world are eager to learn English.Imaging a situation:In a classroom, students from different countries are sitting there to learn English. As a teacher, how are you going to teach? Can you teach them exactly like what you teach for the students in your country? Here athe things we need to know before we teach. Also, understanding and respecting your own cultural roots can help you to respect and understand your students cultural roots. 1.Make sure you know your own culture As we are facing the students from diverse background,it's a good thing to teach them the culture of your own country, also they must be very curious about the country they're landing it rige now.It is good to make a conversation about. So you must be aware of how important of your own culture is,make sure you know some basic of culture, language, social interest, etiquette and values. It is a very good ice break activitystudentsthe class warms up and let students feel relax. 2.Learn about yours students culture Understand how your students’ cultures affect their perceptions, self-esteem, values, classroom behavior, and learning. Use that understanding to help your students feel welcomed, affirmed, respected, and valued. For examples, lots of Asian students they feel shy to ask questions and raise their hands up in the class. That's because they don't like to lose face and also it seemed to be a rude behavior to interrupt teacher's teaching, but unlike Asian students, students from Latin America they are very active to ask questions and always raise their hands up to solve the problem they don't understand. These are seemed to be a very different behavior and as a teacher we need to know about that and balance that situation. 3.Understand your students's linguistic traits All of your students have their mother tongue, and because if that,we need to know some traits of their language because when they speak the second language, they will have their own accents. For example,"th" sound is very difficult for lots of Asian students because they don't have that sound. They usually pronounce "s" or "f" rather than "th".When it comes to Latino students, they have a very difficult time to distinguish between "t" and "d" also some of the students have hard time to pronounce "y".All of the problems they make are because of they mother tongue. So we need to understand their linguistic traits then we can help them with their accents effectively. It is better to help students to make their accents intelligent. 4.Do not talk about sensitive topics Students from diverse backgrounds means they all have different culture, religion, language, society and politics. No matter where they're from, they're just a normal studem eager to learn some knowledge. It is very unwise to ask sensitive questions or start sensitive topics like:We don't really like Muslim or Socialism or something else. That is very stupid. As a student in a diverse classroom before,I've been through that experience and that's why I don't want it to happen to other students. My teacher told everyone in my classroom including me that America doesn't like China. And also she asked me if I eat dog or not.I was shocked because A:I don't eat dogs and B: that's not nice at all and I didn't feel being welcomed and I felt being excluded. I just want to say wWe are all from earth. We are together. It is a good thing to keep people concected and love each other. The last thing is :be respectful and be appreciate.Love and peace makes you a good teacher in a diverse classroom.
