Throughout school, I was a good student but a quiet one. The one that never spoke up or participated fully. I actively tried to float through my studies merely to get good grades and move on. My mixture of a shy personality and tame demeanor was not a good match for what seemed almost all teachers in my life. However, one teacher changed this outlook for the rest of my academic career. This teacher took the time to build a relationship with me and invested time into making sure I did more than just get “the good grades.” This teacher gave me the confidence to succeed with a little belief in me and lots of encouragement. Due to this close relationship they built with me, I felt comfortable enough to make mistakes and try a new approach all for the sake of learning and growing. This is what I want to do for my future students. I desire to make sure they know I will not reprimand them for trying if their answer is wrong. If they are struggling, I will not make them feel small or incapable, I will build them up and teach them that they can succeed and that sometimes mistakes are necessary. I have never liked the way certain teachers embarrass children in front of their peers to make them feel inferior for getting the answer wrong. I experienced this terrible feeling myself and have watched many other peers experience it as well. The product of such negative interactions only lessened the likelihood of students answering questions in the future, participating in class, or their success overall within the course. These experiences with teachers tainted future relationships with teachers. When one does not feel comfortable, they will not ask questions most especially if they do not understand. For students and I, this greatly interfered with our success. My goal is to use what the ITTT text taught me such as use warmers and fun games with introductions. This will open the opportunity to build up a great relationship between student and teacher. I have learned that within the engage phase of the lesson, it is not about correctness, so do not correct every mistake. This will actively encourage students to continue to speak up in future lessons. During the activate stage for shy students, perhaps create a group activity instead of a class activity. This will put less pressure and anxiety onto the student. This will ensure the student's confidence within themselves and their overall relationship with the teacher. I plan on keeping the above tips in mind within my classroom. Even during discipline, I will still, to the best of my ability, keep it on a positive note. Control in the classroom is important to keep a productive learning environment. However, it is important to not make the student dread coming to class and feel uncomfortable. I think this will help the students and I to have a great and successful career. Including success academically, a good basis for future teacher-student relationships, and the pursuit of further education whether this is for personal reasons or job opportunities to give them or their families brighter futures.
