When using flashcards to teach students it allows repetition and improves visual memorization. It helps the student if the teacher was to share little amounts of information to the student, not to overwhelm them, so they may be able to stay focus on the task at hand. Flashcards are one of the many resources that could be used in class activities, they could also be used for homework as well. While using flashcards, it would be helpful to use some with visual art to help with memory, this allows students to be more active and not become so bored during this phase. In this essay, I will talk about five different activities with flashcards that could be used during study session in class. Teachers can find these activities on www.tefl.net or www.google.com. Flashcard Pictionary is a fun and exciting game to engage students in learning new vocabulary from drawing. This game is also useful for a large class, the teacher can break the class up into two groups of eight or more. The students are to pick a category that is on one of the cards and draw to the best of their ability on the whiteboard, what they have picked from the flash card. If they don’t guess correctly they are to pass the play off to the next group and they can give it a try. Some Pictionary games have dice that should be rolled to move pieces along the board. This will bring creativity and exercise memory so that student will have the knowledge of certain words and what category they would be classified in. Flashcard Flash is an energetic game that students can play. Students are to pair up and possibly have their glasses ready for the flash of the word. One student is to press the card against their chest and turn it around quickly for a quick flash and have the other student guess what the word may very well be. They can do this attempt three or four times and if not it should be passed to the other student to give it a go. This is all still a part of memory, students can go over words they could and couldn’t pronounce and focus more on what they need to work on. Long vowel sounds drilling is a fast word game so be prepared to have done some lip and sound pronunciation drilling. Teachers can also show students at the end of this game how to use their tongue, lip, as well as how to use their vocal chords when saying a word. This game is good for the teacher to be a part of so that students can have more of a clear demonstration of how to use and pronounce the word. The Teacher should show the class the card moving it from left to right. For example, “age” is a long vowel, the a sound can be magnified slowly to show students the correct way of saying a word. Student’s are to follow along with the teacher and then eventually speeding up the process. Once they have done this a few times the teacher can then show flashcard and move it quickly or slowly. Stations is a great game for how well students are listening to the sound of the word and pointing out certain words or pictures. If the classroom is big enough you could place words on the wall and the other word on the opposite side. When you say the word the student can use a sticker or sticky paper to identify the vowel in the word. I would suggest using one wall for vowel recognition and the other for pictures. Last but not least, is the Flashcard shout out where students do this as group instead of pairs or teams. The teacher or student can pick a category, students are to call out what is on the card. For example, numbers can be used once the students identify what is on the card, who ever gets it correct first can get the card and the one with the most is the winner. You can come up with different categories just remember to keep it on their verbal level. In conclusion, flashcards are very effective and engaging for the students and teachers. It reduces teacher talking time so that students may be able to have time to learn among themselves. These games will help prepare the students for other exercise if you have the time. The flashcards can be used for family time were students can get support for them as well.
