Many countries around the world speaks English as their primary language now days, such as the United States, British, Canada, Australia, etc. More and more countries support their people to learn English as their second language. According to multiple research reports, there are over 1.5 billion people who speaks English, that includes both native speakers and second language speakers. English had become a global language because it is widely spoken. Although everyone know that English is a global language and wants to learn it, but not many people know the reason and how did it become the most popular language on earth. There are many reasons that English had become a global language such as literature and science. But the three main reasons that it is widely spoken is, Colonization, War, and Immigration. First, the Colonization. Most people know that England colonized the North America, which made countries like the United States and Canada a English-speaking country. However, what some people don’t know was that England also colonized large part of the Caribbean, Africa, New Zealand, and Australia. This made English had to be learned in all these colonized countries. Since then, the whole North America and large part of Europe countries had to learn and speak English. After colonization, about one third of the countries around the world speaks English as either native language or minority language. Therefore, Colonization was one of the important reasons that English had become a global language. Second, the War. War was another reason that English become a global language. The United States, British, and France won the first world war. The Treaty of Versailles was signed in English and French. This had huge influence on English around the world. During World War 2, the United States’ economy had been boosted from producing supplies for the war, and English was taken around the world as a language of trade. Since the United States and Britain won the second world war, it brought even more influence on English around the world. Third, the migration. During the Colonial Era of the United States, many immigrants came from English-speaking countries, and many immigrants came non-English speaking countries. Those non-English speaking immigrants had to learn English in order to communicate and reside in the United States. Moreover, after World War 2, the United States had become the richest country in the world. Caused even more people around the world wanting to immigrate to the United States for a better life. According to Jynnah Radford, the author of “Key Findings about U.S. Immigrants,” there are over 40 million immigrants live in the United States as 2019. All these people must learn English because they live in an English-speaking country. And this does not include people who immigrated to countries like Britain or Australia. Consequently, there are many other reasons that why English is widely spoken around the world. Such as the great English poet William Shakespeare, the most famous scientist Albert Einstein, etc. These famous people also had huge influence on English.
