Writing and speaking are the two productive skills of any language, as this unit demonstrates. Both are crucial for English learners, but must be taught with different emphases. For instance, speaking requires students to produce English in a more limited time than writing usually does, but allows for more immediate corrections and responses. Fluency and accuracy as equally important goals of language-learning come into play, here. Both must be emphasized in both writing and speaking. But the opportunities for eliciting each in writing will be distinct from the opportunities to do so in speaking.
