I love visiting new countries and meeting new people. Having lived in a number of different countries and grown up in a multicultural environment allowed me to learn how to interact and work with people from different cultural backgrounds, and made me profoundly interested in travel and world history. However, if I did not speak English my travel experiences would have been a lot worse. Since my first trip to China in early 2018, I always wanted to return to Asia and immerse myself in the culture. I am absolutely fascinated with the continent, its people and its history. So, in August of 2018 I embarked on a great adventure travelling through China, North Korea, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. I spent a total of 10 months living in Asia and during my time there, I made a lot of new friends, had a lot of exciting adventures and never felt bored. How was this possible if I did not speak any Asian languages? English. Wherever I went, I met many other travelers and locals who spoke English. However, I noticed that many people who did not speak English have not traveled outside of their country. Language is a major barrier for a lot of people who want to travel abroad. No matter what country, English is everywhere and we cannot escape it in our day-to-day lives. A good example of this are movies. Hollywood movies dominate the global entertainment market. Because of this, many people around the globe are exposed to the western culture and the English language whenever they watch movies. This has an impact on how people think, speak and ultimately perceive the world. Many Hollywood movie quotes can be seen and heard everywhere; they have transcended the language barrier. It is mind blowing how a pen of a screenwriter can change the way the world population communicates. Most widely recognized pop music is also written in English. Outside of entertainment, English has also been long established as the international language of business. Giant corporations have offices all over the planet, so to conduct business and international trade it is necessary to have a main language for communication. Historically English has been established as that language for a long time now. English is also used as the main language during meetings of international organizations such as the United Nations and the World Trade Organization. For anyone who wants to pursue an international career, learning English is a must. Even though Chinese is the most widely spoken native language on the planet, not many people outside of China speak Chinese. English on the other hand, not only is one of the most widely spoken native languages on Earth, it is the most popular second language to learn. It is no coincidence that many countries have included English in their school curriculum. Like any other language, English can be hard to master for a non-native speaker but the benefits of knowing the language are truly worth it.
