Doing outside activities is one of my favorite school activities. Nothing is more stifling than being indoors all day. Children are usually full of energy, so to release that energy, it would be more practical to just have them learn English outside a classroom, where they can be confronted with many objects and people in front of them, automatically making them think. For adults, they are most likely to be familiar with their surroundings, but because they're already familiar with every word in their native tongue, it might be easier for them to connect the two different languages and their words. One such activity that could be used for both adults and children would be to give them a quiz that describes objects that can be found only outside a classroom. For example, 'It's big, green and brown and moves with the wind", would be a tree. Then go outside and have a walk with them through a few blocks or in the park. Have them write down the answers. Once your walk is over, go back to the classroom and ask them randomly what their answer is. For children, you could make it simpler by telling them a color, and they do the same process by writing down what they see and then later some of them present what they've seen. Another activity, more suitable for younger children, would be to go to a nearby park with some instruments and sing a few simple children's songs in English. Examples could be the ABC's, the wheels on the bus go round, etc. The teacher would have to go ahead and sing it out first, and then have the students repeat each line so that they'd be able to memorize the whole song. Then after a few tries, sing it all together. Also, have some student(s) shake a rattle or play the tambourine in rhythm with the song. The teacher should be an example and play the instruments with the students. Or, if it's someone's Birthday, they could go ahead and sing Happy Birthday and do a mild celebration to make the student feel more valued by the teacher and other students. The reason why this activity would be more suitable outside is that you wouldn't have to worry about being too loud with the students and there is no chance of disturbing the other classes. Collecting items or objects from the outside during a certain season is another English activity for the students. For example, a scavenger hunt would be very educational and fun. The class could do this in every season too. The teacher writes down an English sentence on a small piece of paper, the difficulty of the sentence depends on how advanced the student is in speaking and understanding the English language. That sentence will describe an object that the student will have to find and, either take it back to the teacher or take a picture of it, in the case that it's not transportable. Later on, when all of the students have found what they were supposed to find, the class will go back to the classroom and present their note and object of finding. For children, it is also an option to flatten the object, or if it's a picture, to print it out, and glue it on a slightly bigger piece of paper. After all that is done, have the students write the objects name under it and their name, and hang them up on the wall to decorate the classroom. You can also just do a normal class outside, like have them read a small story or article outside, or have them write down a story about their environment. Having them do this outside will make them more relaxed and let them automatically think more about what you are trying to teach them, in one way or more.
