Is it necessary to get a TEFL certificate if you want to teach online? Many people can wonder. In this essay I will try to present the arguments which will relate to that content. At first, lets try to discover the reasons. Why would anyone think about teaching online without getting the proper certificate done? There can be many answers for that question. Some of you can say that the reason is money. Or the lack of money. Is that truly can be the reason? As we know variety of good TEFL courses are not for free. Costs of the best ones can go up even to more than a thousand euro per course. It can be a lot of money for someone for example, who have just lost his job. In the other hand before attempting to do my own TEFL course I did my research. I noticed that there is also a variety of the courses with a lower price tag on them. So what else could be the reason of thinking about teaching online without the proper certificate? It can be the lack of time, TEFL courses takes around 4 weeks to complete. It can be laziness. It can be lack of need to do the course. Now, when we realized some of the reasons which can answer for; why would someone question the necessity of doing TEFL course prior teaching online? We can try to focus on the question placed at the very beginning of this essay. Is it necessary to get a TEFL certificate if you want to teach online? Many online language schools require from their English teachers to hold an accredited TEFL certificate, so that they know what training and skills a prospective English teacher posses- as says the International TEFL Academy on their website. Does every online language school require the same things from their candidates? The result of my observations while reading the online job offers on the various English teaching job related websites is very consistent. I would say that most of the schools have common needs while looking for a candidate to fill up their teaching online position. Of course every advertisement will have their own differences. But usually those differences include the amount of the money in the proposed salary or presence of the degree that is needed or that is not a necessity to apply for an available position. In the most job advertisements that I've seen, the TEFL certificate is recognized as a strong advantage or necessity while applying for an online teaching position. Lets remind ourselves in that point, that finished TEFL course provides a range of the information for our future client about our knowledge in the teaching field. Basing on my experience, the potential employer will usually prefer an employee with a teaching experience plus the TEFL course over someone with just the teaching experience. I can easily find the reasons why. TEFL courses usually provides to their customers effective teaching knowledge, and they explain in details how to deal with the students at the first place. That being said in my final conclusion I want to say that in my opinion having the TEFL certificate is a huge advantage, and sometimes even necessity while applying for a teaching online position.
