Summative Task: #127: How to teach English to Children online: How will I teach English to young students online. Upon the successful completion of my ITTT online TEFL course (hopefully) I will be applying for a job to teach English to young students online. It is an exciting and certainly a challenging prospect for me. I have not taught in a classroom in many years. I have never taught online. I was a business owner for many years in the US after my time teaching. Now, living in Thailand, I want to get back into teaching again. The instructions for this task explains; “it should not be about the way you felt during your course or your course experience”. But since I am attempting to reinsert myself into the teaching profession after many years, I don’t see that as being realistic. Everything from the 20 units is fresh in my memory. I will hope to retain and utilize all the pertinent information, tips, advice, examples, do’s and don’t’s, etc. Besides trying to obtain the necessary certificate, I took the course to refresh myself & update my knowledge. My first lesson will be so interesting. I’m sure I will be quite apprehensive. But that will subside after the first greeting. My students will be young. They will know some English prior to beginning. Hopefully, I will be advised by the hiring company as to what extent they are educated in English. But if not, it will be up to me to find out. Very importantly, start off each lesson with a smile! I know it has been advised not to allow utilization of the student’s native language in the classroom. But I think it would be helpful for me to learn a small amount of words in their native language, just to create a rapport at the beginning of the lessons. I was thinking of learning words like “Hello, good morning/afternoon, thank you, you’re welcome”, etc. After that introduction period, using their native language will not be encouraged. I plan to be well prepared before my first lesson. I will guide them in our conversations to hopefully find out what they want and what they need. Then tell them what I will be expecting of them. I will use simple and clear instructions and demonstrations. Also, since the lessons are to be one on one, I will be working right along with them, helping them, prompting them, praising them and giving them constant encouragement. Some simple games combined, with a little competition thrown in, will be a good tool. I will use many types of oral exercises with lots of repetition. I will try to minimize their boredom, if applicable, by keeping things fun and at a good pace. I’m hoping I can keep the students motivated. Since they have not signed up for these lessons themselves, I am sure their parents will also be encouraging them to get the most out of them. I see that the company I hope to work for has a chat feature outside the classroom. Students are free to message me and share experiences with me and other students. I like this feature as a way of building interest and keep the students connected and motivated. This concludes my summative task essay. Thank you.
