Teaching online has been a growing demand. It is preferred by many teachers and students; it seems like a revolutionary thing. This growth has clearly affected teaching English as a second language. When searching for online ESL courses or tutors, numerous websites appear. The reason of this noticeable increase in the ESL online market is the great advantage for both ESL teachers and ESL students. Advantages for teachers: Being an online ESL teacher gives you the flexibility to set your working hours. You will no longer be bounded by that 9 to 5 job. This advantage doesn’t only help full-time online ESL teachers, but also students who want to teach English as a part-time job. Furthermore, online teaching benefits full-time onsite English teachers and employers who want to supplement their existing income. Online ESL teachers can work from anywhere in the world as long as they have Internet connection and their laptops. Isn’t it amazing to be free to travel without waiting for your yearly vacation? The teacher can also work from his/her own comfortable pace. No need to deal with getting up early in the morning, rush hours, waiting on the line for a cup of coffee, or a boring routine meeting outside of the teaching hours. Teaching ESL online opens opportunities for teachers who were not lucky enough to find a local job or able to teach abroad. In addition, the earning potential can be huge depending on the teaching hours and who you are teaching. However, because most of the ESL teaching websites only accept English native speakers, the non-native speakers can start their own website or even social media account. This is what I’ve been doing for a few months now. I started an Instagram account and paid for some influencers to advertise it. Now within only a few months, I have 15 students. What did it cost me? A laptop, a good microphone, and time for preparation. Advantages for students: Learning English as a second language online has its advantages for the students as well. School students or even college students are already busy with school. Thus, they wouldn’t prefer to go to another school to learn English, rather they would prefer to take their ESL classes online wearing their pajamas, sitting on their comfortable sofa. This also applies to employers who want to learn English. Online ESL classes are in fact more convenient. Students can have a flexible schedule where they can pick their class time. They can take their classes late at night, right before or after school/work, or on their long breaks. There is also no need to postpone learning English until graduation or a work vacation. The student can start learning right after he/she decides to. They are the decision-maker. Students are less nervous with the one to one interaction that online classes provide. They are less worried about making mistakes and losing face in front of their classmates. This, as a result, encourages the student to be calm and confident to participate and progress efficiently in the learning process. Furthermore, students who join online classes with other students can still enjoy the stress less environment. Online classes have less rules and etiquettes to be followed. This environment breaks the classroom routine many students dislike. ESL online classes are usually cheaper than onsite classes. Going to a local ESL school is expensive in many if not all countries. And going to an ESL school in an English-speaking county is even more expensive because the students must pay for visas, flights, school and living expenses. In contrast, ESL online classes bring a native or a qualified ESL teacher right to the student’s own pace for less than half of the price. Teaching online is the trend in the ESL teaching field. Many ESL teachers are switching to online teaching rather than in-person teaching. It is more convenient in terms of when, where, and how you teach. Online teaching pays well. Students are getting interested in online ESL courses. They can have a flexible schedule, feel less pressured and pay less to learn the language.
