To answer this question I look back to the time I used to work for a private English training center and few other ESL schools I worked at, during this time I meet ESL teacher some native some non-native all sharing the same goal, to educate their fellow students helping them and giving guidance to reach their goals, here I pick up few important personal qualities a teacher should possess. 1, organization Going to class without preparing a lesson plan can have its own setbacks, while teaching every class whether its 30 minutes or 2 hours long a teach should be prepared and know what he/she going to do during the entire class, otherwise without a proper management of time and lack of preparation time will be lost and students will end up learning noting, so having an organized time table will guarantee a smooth flow of teaching and learning progress. 2, open-minded One of the most common situations a teacher will face while teaching group class is the diversity of students with different kind of behavior and background that attend the class some want to share their culture and stories to the rest of the class which can be interesting , so being open-minded towards such situation is very important because it will allow the students to build confidence and gain motivation in future courses. 3, Patience Yes, teaching can be frustrating sometimes. I’ve had students misbehaving constantly during class, some really slow to pick things up. 99 times out of a 100 this is down to something the teacher is doing in the classroom. Patience with students is very important, having such personal traits will show the teachers discipline and demonstrates quality in a teacher. 4, Altruism Not in the sense of charity or buying gifts but in the sense of being concerned for the well-being of your students. In the classroom, the students should be the star. You as the teacher should take the back seat regularly so the students get the practice they need. Turn and talks, pairwork, groupwork and mingles are all great at achieving this and can be done with any age group. 5, Fun Showing a lighter side is essential when working with younger kids. This doesn’t mean being a clown, but it absolutely means: smiling, praising and making jokes. This will create a better rapport with students which will allow the teacher to achieve better results. Last of all Dedication Put simply, the teachers who care the most, get the most out of their students and their students get a better English education. Dedication in ESL teaching is about putting real thought and effort into every lesson plan. Some teachers go to amazing lengths when preparing their classes, putting real thought into what the students will get out of every activity, squeezing every last drop of language from them and sequencing their classes so that the students are challenged every step of the way. Dedication doesn’t just start and end with planning though. One of the most satisfying feelings you can have as a teacher is helping an underperforming student achieve their potential. If faced with a weak student a great teacher will work with them outside of the class for even just 5 minutes. That one-to-one time can make all the difference by giving the student the confidence to succeed.
