Speaking and writing are productive skills needed to develop communication ability. Accuracy and fluency are both important to develop in this aspect of learning the target language. The teacher needs to make sure that her lesson creates a purpose or desire for speaking and writing to encourage students to engage in the learning process, as they practice their skills. During the study phase of the lesson, accuracy of pronunciation and understanding of vocabulary is of primary importance. During the engage phase of the lesson, when the students are practicing speaking, fluency is more important than accuracy, to allow a free flowing experience. Handwriting and spelling require more accuracy. Learning punctuation can be particularly challenging due to the differences in the way other languages are structured. Games can be an effective way to practice developing productive skills.
