Games in the classroom During English language course a Teacher must go through specific aspects in grammar, syntax, definitions which may leave very serious effect in the class. Keeping the attention of students is one of the main assumptions to get students obtain the matter of lesson being taught. In order to keep the attention, seriousness should be well balanced with fun, entertainment and sprinkled with motivation. These can be achieved with Games usage. Games have a wide range where a teacher can use them. In general games are fantastic tool to entertain class and set friendly atmosphere with hint of learning figure as all students attending the games are extending their vocabulary and receptive skills. The most common opportunity to use games in practice is Engage phase of ESA lesson. Making students feel comfortable, relaxed, entertained and set in learning English mode is a perspective lesson start and will probarly lead to successful advance in course. But what games are possible to use? Last Man Standing Tell students to form a circle. Name category, theme, place and start tossing the ball to each other. The student catching the ball has to tell one word and pass the ball. If the student doesn´t know a word, looses and should stay outside the circle. Therefore The Last Man Standing. Even so students no longer participate in the game, their attention is still on the words being said. Fizz buzz A very simple number game. It can be used for both beginners and advanced students. Teacher tells students to count numbers 1,2,3 or from certain number 20,21,22. After the rule is said to shout fizz as comes the third number so, 1,2, fizz or shout buzz with decimal numbers. Word linking You can set a story, conversation or let students start ther own but! The students are allowed to use only one word each. Very fun game, One never know what will happen. We are capable of making the right environment for our students but there are aspects we can´t influence, for example Weather. If our lesson start at 8 am. In the Lazy Monday morning, students are likely to be unmotivated to learn. Warmers are perfect solution in these situations. They should be short and fast to keep students going. Let me set an example. Hangman One student/teacher think of a word, write it on the board and others guess what word is it by asking single letters included in the word. It can be used to practice vocabulary learned in previous lessons. Memory games First Students say ´´ I was in Greece.´´ Next one says ´´ I was in Greece last summer.´´ And so on…. Special situation appears when the course is starting. Teacher needs to establish rapport, get to know students´ needs, aims, interests. According to obtained information, Lector considers lesson plan. For this purpose can be used a game too. The ball game It is recommended to use soft ball ( In order to avoid injures). Toss the ball to a student and ask him a question, when answered let him pass the ball to another student and ask a question too and that´s it you are already playing. ABC Each student gets three blank cards. The first one is for name, surname and age, the second one is for four adjectives describing physical appearance and personality and the last on is for favourite TV programme, type of music. Once written, collect all cards, sit students in the circle and hand out three cards each student. If a card is with his/her details, Exchange the card. Game start with one student asking a person on their right to swap cards and it goes on until one student gets all his cards back and says ´´ABC´´. Students then place hand in the middle of the circle. The last one to do so gets the letter ´´A´´. The one with all his cards, reads the information out loud and leave the game as spectator. If the same student put his hand in the middle last, he gets a letter ´´B´´ and happens to do so the third time , he gets the lettec ´´C´´ and has to repeat all informations about students involved in the game. It was not common to use games as part of learning proccess. That has changed and teacher should always keep an open, creative mind towards his students. There are many resources where various games can be found. It is up to teacher to choose the appropriate ones and decide when to use them.
