Kendall Sholtess TEFL Course 14 January 2020 Why Every EFL Teacher Should Complete a TEFL Course Taking a TEFL course should be the hallmark of every new EFL teacher’s career. The lessons learned in a TEFL course can help new teachers avoid many mistakes in teaching, and in general make her/him a more effective teacher from the get-go. This is because quality TEFL courses are based on solid research in the fields of education and foreign language instruction. They are not based solely on guesswork but have been tried and tested in many language classrooms over a long period of time. They are also the result of the communication and collaboration of the worldwide teaching community as to which methods and materials are most effective in the classroom. It is also very important for adult students and/or the parents of young learners to know that the teacher is qualified to teach the students. Without the certification, it is difficult for them to assess how effective the class might be. This might affect their willingness to take up the class as well as their motivation while the class is in progress. Students and parents need to be assured that there will be a good result once the class is finished. For an experience teacher, a TEFL course is still quite useful as it can help remind them of aspects that they have forgotten or not used in a while. Therefore, it can be a source of renewal as well as undated knowledge about current research and practices. As an example, when I first started teaching EFL classes as an instructional paraprofessional in the mid-1990’s at a local high school, I had no idea of how to do lesson planning or classroom management. The school principle often came by and checked my lesson plans but looking back I have to admit that they weren’t up to the standard that I have developed since then. TEFL training could have helped me immensely at this stage. It wasn’t until I moved to China that I began really learning how to teach. My first boss had a Masters degree in education. The lessons he taught me about classroom presence, management and lesson planning set me off to a good start in my China teaching career. Over the years I have been in close contact with many well-qualified EFL teachers, and through their guidance and much experience have made great progress. Although I had been advised to take a TEFL course many times, I never took the plunge. After reflecting, in the end I realized that having that certificate was important to my students and to their parents. But what is most striking to me is how much more productive I could have been if I had taken the course early on. I have thence concluded that every EFL teacher should have one at the beginning of their career, and even those with teaching experience can be aided greatly by the review and more current know-how afforded by such courses. In conclusion, there are many reasons for taking a TEFL course. Most important of all is to gain the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively teach. It is particularly necessary for new teachers to begin their careers with such knowledge. It is also reassuring to the students and responsible persons involved to know that their teacher has the qualifications to be effective and produce results.
