The earliest records of English learning for Chinese people can be traced back to the mid-19th century, and With the development of society, English learning has become more and more important in china. However, there are some common problems and barriers that have been bothering Chinese learners through out all these years. Poor Oral English It has probably been the biggest problem for almost all the learners in china, we hear countless “ my English is poor” from different people all the time . In china, we even have a name for this - 哑巴英语 which means dumb English, we can read fine, we can write fine, we can listen OK, but we cannot speak fine, even for a CET4, CET6 passer.(CET is short for college English test). the reason for this are mainly because 1)Native Language Interference it is quite normal that your first language is going to affect how you learn and speak English in almost every aspect, such as the way you think, the way you pronounce, the way you organize your sentences, etc. For example: in English we usually talk about the results first and then add the reasons behind English logic:I was late because the alarm didn't go off this morning, and i missed the earliest subway to company . Chinese logic: in the morning ,the alarm didn't go off, and then i missed the earliest subway to company, so i was late. 2)Education system in school. back in decades ago, we were too score-centered, including our teachers, our parents , and ourselves. We had so many different exams and almost none was for oral English. Fortunately, after these years passed, Chinese schools , teachers and parents have all come to realize the importance of oral English. And now, oral Elisha has become a significant part of lots of exams. And also English training institutes have become more and more popular in china. 3)Lack of speaking environment and study resource. As we all know ,the environment and study resource are so important for English learning. Before the internet and smart phones went popular, the one and only recourse for chinese learners was English textbook, and the only English speaking environment was when reading English dialogues in the book, even at this time of day, we still remember the very “famous and unforgettable” dialogues ‘nice to meet you’ ‘nice to meet you , too’ ‘how are you?’ ‘I'm fine, thank you ,and you’ For lots of university students back at that time, ‘I'm fine, thank you, and you?’ was the only respond they know to the greeting ‘how are you’, and now, it has become a self-mocking joke for that generation , to mock how bad our oral English was. With the development of society, now we have internet, smart phones, endless Apps, we can easily access to English environment and resources at any time. This hardly is perfect environment, but this is a big improvement for Chinese learners . listening Has this every occurred to you when you speak English to a Chinese person, he/she either looks confused or doesn’t even respond to some of your questions? Well, it’s mostly because he/she doesn't understand what you said rather than being impolite. And this usually gets worse when you speak faster. 2 reasons might have caused this problem: 1)lack of basic vocabularies. 2)they don’t know much of the rules of syllables. For example: i should be there in~an~hour Take~it~easy What do you think~of~it When they hear words connected, they most likely have difficulty to get all what they have heard. Grammar 1) tense Tense is a new concept for beginners, There are lots of different tenses in English, past tense, present tense, future tense, while in Chinese, we don’t have tenses. We add some specific words to express some certain period of time. 2) he/she, his/her, you/your/yours ,my/mine For any English teachers, they have all probably seen these kind of mistakes that Chinese learners made. 3)structure It’s a lot difficult for Chinese learners to understand all kinds of clauses. For example: This novel, which I have read three times, is very touching.VS: this novel is very touching, and i have read it three times. The second one is obviously easier for them to understand. ... There are1000 problems for 1000 learners. The above mentioned are some quite common problems that Chinese learners would usually have . it is very necessary for teachers to get to know what problems our learners have, so we can come up with methods and solutions to help them.
