Most students are classified into age categories when they start school. This is because people in close age groups have similar levels of knowledge and maturity. While every student has their own individual needs, every student can be classified as a young learner or adult. The needs of each group vary greatly; hence different methods of teaching must be applied towards each group. There are also both disadvantages and advantages to teaching each group. One of the greatest advantages of teaching young learners is that they absorb information very quickly. Their brains are similar to sponges where they seem to have a limitless ability to retain information that is shared with them on a daily basis. It is also because of this advantage that it allows a teacher to have a fuller curriculum. Young learners are also quicker to adapt and learn new tasks, which may mean that they finish their “study” activities quicker. This can leave more time for the teacher to have longer and more elaborate “activate” activities. It can also leave more time for teachers to simply engage with the students and develop rapport. A disadvantage to teaching young learners is that there are times where the teachers have to be rule enforcers. Young learners tend to have more energy and less attention span in comparison to adult learners. This means that young learners may sometimes become distracted or a little rowdy. Teachers will have to spend more time to manage the class and ensure that the students stay focused and on task. This can become mentally exhausting on certain days. A reason why teachers enjoy teaching adults is because there is more room for deeper conversation. The maturity level in the classroom is much higher, which can allow for some deeper and more interesting conversations. Adult students who decide to come to class are usually more motivated compared to young learners. Very often, young learners are not at the class because they want to, but because they need help or their parents want them to attend. This is completely different from an adult learner as these people have enrolled into these classes specifically. An adult learners come to class with an expectation of achieving something, thus are eager to learn. It is safe to assume that most adults will also have full time jobs. This is something that will work against a teacher in the classroom as most adults attended classes in the evening. The class will commence after working a full day at the company, hence their energy levels can be very low. This can be especially difficult when a teacher is trying to rouse interest in doing group activities or work that requires movement. While an adult student is motivated to learn, having a tiring work day will decrease their ability to focus. It is the responsibility of the teacher to find a way to keep the class engaged and interesting so that their students may stay awake. The needs of young learners and adults are very different and it can be very hard to make the switch between teaching the two groups. More time may be required in lesson planning and being able to adapt to the needs of the classroom. Regardless of these concerns, the most important thing for a teacher to remember is that classes should always be built around the needs of the student and not the needs of the teacher.
