When dealing with young learners the parent’s role in education can have a major impact on a student’s success. No matter how proficient a teacher is in their teaching ability, they only have a limited amount of time to interact with the student. A parent on the other hand typically has much more time to spend with their child than that of the teacher. A students’ parent can encourage the student in different ways. If the student's parent encourages the child outside the classroom the child has a higher probability to come back into the classroom eager and ready to learn. If the student is coming to the classroom with a positive attitude and motivated to learn then the materials taught by the teacher are going to be more successfully retained by the student. The reverse scenario is that the student’s parents are not encouraging and have the mindset that their child’s studies are unimportant and or are just a waste of time. If this is the case, then it is very possible that the student will also adopt the same mindset as their parents. In this scenario, it is much more likely that the student will come to class unmotivated and less willing to learn. When a student is unmotivated, they are less likely to retain the information taught to them. Other than a parent just being supportive they can also be actively involved in their child’s learning. Ways a parent can get involved is by helping the students with their studies outside of the classroom. Parents helping their children with their studies outside of the classroom helps to motivate the students and provides more learning opportunities. From birth, a parent is a child’s original teacher. Parents teach their children the basics of most everything in their young life’s. Most children’s first words are those they learned from their parents. So, when a parent is involved with their child’s continued education it is natural for them to learn from their parents. There are many ways a parent can be involved in their child’s studies. When it comes the case of learning English as a second language one approach is to encourage the use of English when the student is outside of the classroom. One way to encourage using English outside of the classroom is for the parent to learn alongside of their child. If a student’s parents are not efficient in English, they can have their child teach them new words and or phrases they learned while in class. Parents that are more efficient in English can encourage the use of English within the home more. This can be accomplished by the parent having conversations with the student using only English. English is not an easy language to learn, but with the help of active parents, it can become a much easier goal to achieve. Parents can in many cases be the key factor between a student’s success or failure in learning the language. Simply by having supportive parents that can be enough to keep a student motivated in their studies. At the end of the day, it is a parent’s role to support and encourage their child in their studies.
