Grammar is the foundational building block of effective communication. The same way that improper wiring can cause an unclear picture on a television screen, improper grammar, can similarly skew the clarity and meaning of an intended message. Learning proper grammar is important for English learners because it will: build confidence, help make good impressions, and grow effective communication skills. It is crucial for English as a Second Language (ESL) students to build a strong grammatical foundation. With a strong foundation rooted in proper grammar ESL students will be able to expand their knowledge and open up the possibilities for further success and future achievements. When ESL students are first learning English a teacher can be instrumental in helping them root their learning on the foundation of proper grammar. When a teacher is able to help students build a grammatical foundation, it allows for students to better understand how words or phrases should be properly used. This will help students build a level of confidence in their own ability to speak and write in English. When an ESL student doesn’t know the proper grammar or usage of a word or phrase it can often lead to a loss in the student’s confidence and ability to learn. As a teacher, I believe a crucial first step in the teaching process is to help the students establish a sense of confidence in their ability to learn and speak the language. A strong grammatical foundation can also help ESL students make a good impression. Whether it’s in another educational setting or a professional setting, ones ability to correctly use grammar while communicating is key. The majority of ESL students are learning English as a second language for a specific reason. Some of these reasons may include; continuing their education further, applying for an English speaking job, or possibly even moving to an English speaking country. Whatever the reason may be, it is important that an ESL student has firm knowledge of proper grammar in order to make a good impression and help to set the stage for their next steps. Lastly, the importance of learning grammar is most apparent when establishing effective communication skills. Without the knowledge of proper grammar, communication wires can most certainly get crossed. The improper use of a word or phrase can change the entire meaning of a sentence and can make effective communication challenging. Similarly, the improper use of punctuation or even the lack of punctuation in a sentence can alter the meaning and/or interpretation of the sentence entirely. In an ESL class, the teacher should make it a focal point to stress the importance of grammar in the English language and explain how the proper or improper use of grammar can alter ones ability to effectively communicate their point. In conclusion, it is crucial for ESL students to learn and understand the proper use of grammar. Learning and practicing proper grammar can help students build confidence in their own ability to learn and communicate in English, and make a good impression in future professional or educational settings. The most important reason for learning grammar, however, is to grow effective communication skills by understanding proper word usage and punctuation placement.
