This unit on future tenses, aside from the practical lesson of definitions and usages of each tense, taught me that even present tenses can be used to express future actions. The present simple and present continuous tenses can both be used to describe things that will be happening in the future. However, it is only the five future tenses (simple, continuous, perfect, perfect continuous, and going to future) that can describe spontaneous future actions and predictions. I can see how a new English learner could be easily confused by the crossover between present and future tenses, and I think a great way to combat this confusion is to make sure students have a grasp on the four present and five future tenses and are comfortable using them fluidly before introducing the ways in which their rules have exceptions.
