Unit 9 emphasizes the importance of lesson planning. Lesson planning as a beginner ESL teacher is essentially mandatory. While being too staunchly adherent to a lesson plan may cause issues with flexibility of teaching, it is integral in mitigating issues of control of the Classroom. More advanced teachers may keep a less strict approach to lesson planning in order to allow for teaching of language that meets the needs of the students within a lesson. However, as a beginner teacher, keeping strict lesson plans will help you to better narrow the personal and learning objectives of that particular class. One of the hardest aspects of teaching at the beginning to allotting the amount of time per activity. This is why it is important to both track the progress of a lesson and keep additional tasks related to the learning objective off on the margins of the lesson plan. This allows you both to remember which activities were not completed to allow for completion in the next lesson and to add additional activities during the lesson that are on topic if in case the students complete the task more quickly than originally thought. A good lesson plan will include; personal and lesson objectives, class size, learners level, language concept, anticipated problems with solutions, phases of lesson (ESA) and procedure of phases. Lessons may be planned in the singular or as a sequence of lessons for more complex learning objectives. The methods involved are similar, they just require an additional thread of logic between lessons to ensure coherence among the set of lessons.
