Productive skills There are two productive skills: speaking and writing. Speaking skills. We communicate with each other because we need or we desire. There are many speaking activities combined into 3 main types. 1. Controlled activities – Used in a Study phase. 2. Guided – Used in either the Study or in the Activate phases. 3. Creative – Used in the Activate phase. Before starting speaking, it’s important to • create a need or desire • make sure students have the language knowledge • use pairs in activities to allow interaction and reduce stress Writing skills. There are 3 subskills for writing: 1. Handwriting – tend s to be personal 2. Spelling – whether, weather 3. Punctuation – some languages have no punctuation There are 2 ways of writing: 1. Situational - email, letters 2. Creative – dialogues, poetry, stories
