This unit covered the sorts of assessments that an English teacher will need to use as they work with a class. These types include placement and diagnostic exams, which are administered before and just at the outset of a class, respectively; progress exams, which show both the teacher and each individual student where the student's skills are at; external exams, which give students a chance to demonstrate formally their abilities; and practice exams, which prepare students for external exams. I found the discussion useful, as it alerted me to the different formal benchmarks for English learners that exist around the world.
