AIESEC is an international organization that develops leadership through cross cultural exchanges. It works hand-in-hand with the United Nations in establishment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through community service, career internship, and entrepreneurial internship. In December 2016, I embarked my journey in an AIESEC global volunteer program thru SDG #3: Quality Education. I volunteered to teach English and Philippine culture to students in Poland aged 3-18 years old. After a year, December 2017, I went on another global volunteer program of the same advocacy, in Vietnam. I volunteered to teach the same scope to high school students in Vietnam. During my experiences, I worked with a team of volunteers all over the world such as Mexico, Colombia, Australia, among others. When I volunteered in Poland, I faced several challenges and issues as a youth and as an educator. However, I also felt the fulfillment of teaching and imparting my knowledge to my students. As an Asian girl, there are lots of cultural differences and practices in Poland in the classroom. Despite the differences, I made my way to build rapport to the student and make everyone else comfortable in learning. For my students, English is not an easy language to learn. There are instances wherein the student loses confidence in class, but it is up to the teacher on how he/she will cope up with everyone. In addition to that, there are students who possess a different level of knowledge compared to the others. Upon analyzing each student’s capacity, our class was divided by two. It helped the class and the teachers to progress and taylor fit the lessons for everyone according to their level of knowledge. There are students who struggle, students who showed less interest, but there are also students who worked their way to learn step by step. One day, a teacher came to me and told me that there was a student who reads the dictionary just to talk to us. I was inspired and it occurred to me that teaching English is not only imparting knowledge, but it is also a lifetime impact to the students. After my experience in Poland, it opened my heart to the interest to embarking in a global volunteer experience once again. I went to Vietnam to teach English language and soft skills to high school students. We created several games, devised teaching techniques, and facilitated several group works to enhance participation of all students. It was when I realized that in teaching, it is important for the teacher to cater the needs and assist each of the students since they have different level of knowledge in the language. Before teaching in Poland, I had no teaching experiences or background in English education. I even told myself that I would not engage in teaching as I am not fit to teach others. However, volunteering through AIESEC made me realize and open my eyes to the beauty of teaching. In teaching, there are several techniques and methods that the teacher must utilize. It is not simply presenting and discussing, rather it is the way to develop a student’s skill.
