The productive skill of Speaking and Writing is a great way to elicit communication from students. It is also a means of breaking a student free of his or her's shyness. As was taught in the beginning of this unit the receptive skill of reading and listening, though equally important, does not seem to prompt a student in participation as effectively as a productive skill would. As a teacher I would be mindful to ensure both receptive & productive skills are being utilized and well balanced, but at the same time to be mindful of allowing a student to "hide" behind a writing exercise or a receptive exercise.
