The institution of education is one of the primary forms of socialization in a child's life. Parents are the child's first introduction to education and the relative importance of it. In this essay, I will explain how parents play a vital role in a child's learning experience from the way education is viewed in the household, the parents level of engagement in the child's education, and the upbringing and emotional stability of the child's home life. The way parents view education transcends into their children from an early stage in their upbringing. Although there are other factors such as teachers, standardized tests, and friends that can influence a childs’ learning experience, it is the parents perspective on learning which has the greatest impact on their children's education. Science tells us that you are more likely to attain post secondary education, if your parents have. The higher your education, the more likely it is that you value education and understand the importance of it. It will not be difficult to trickle this down to your children, as you have lived and experienced higher education yourself. When parents are engaged in their children’s school lives, students have the home support and knowledge they need to not only finish their assignments, but also develop a lifelong love of learning. There are different ways that parents can be involved including stimulating at activities such as reading books, visiting museums, and other cultural institutions. This sets an example for the children at home that school is valued in the household and is expected to be by everyone in it. Parent engagement also happens when teachers involve parents in school meetings or events. Finally, it is imperative that teachers develop an interest and responsibility to engage with their children's’ teachers to ensure the child meets the expected educational goals. Children need a supportive space to share and a calming environment to listen and learn. A calming environment will not only help them to open up, but also ask for help when they need it. Families can build trust and understanding by working together to build this trust and understanding. This ultimately strengthens relationships and shows kids that they have a safe place to seek help (Gross, 2017). A well-bonded child is secure and connected which can positively impact almost all aspects of their life. Therefore if raised in a stable environment, a child may excel in areas such as education. This will build the child a strong sense of self. As a result, the child will learn to depend on their own compass, which allows them to be independent and self-actualized. When experiencing instability at an early stage, such as the development stage, a child may find themselves under immense stress (Gross, 2017). [When a child is stressed from consistent poverty, abuse, divorce, or insecurity, it can lead to negative consequences, including behaviour problems, academic problems, social problems, and substance abuse] (Gross, 2017). This could lead to a child experiencing negative changes in eating, sleeping, school performance, relationships, and motivation (Gross, 2017). Ultimately, these stressors will be evident in the child's school life and their education as a whole. In conclusion, it is evident that parents can affect a child's education from their home life to their outlook on education. It is important for parents to understand the influence they have on a child's education, so we can do a deeper dive on how we as a society can positively impact parents and their children in regards to education.
