Unit 12 explains how to present and teach productive skills (speaking and writing). It's important for teachers to create a need or desire to communicate otherwise getting students to participate will be difficult. A student is much more likely to be engaged in a lesson if a teacher picks a topic that interests the student than if they're not interested or if they don't see a point to the exercise. When presenting a lesson teachers should make sure that there are plenty of guided and controlled activities during the study phase of the lesson in which accuracy can be checked in preparation for the fluency based activities during the activate stage. Some techniques for encouraging communication and reducing stress in students include pair work, group work, and as mentioned above, plenty of guided/controlled practice before more open ended and freer activities which helps to limit fear of making a mistake.
