This unit focuses on the productive skills, speaking and writing. There are two general categories of speaking activities: accuracy and fluency activities. Accuracy activities are more concerned with producing correct language, while fluency activities are more concerned with allowing the students to speak and practice the language in a creative manner. Classroom speaking activities can be divided into controlled activities, such as drilling, guided activities, such as dialogues, and creative communication activities, such as free role play and communication games. Both speaking and writing activities should be carefully thought out beforehand, and should include ways to arouse students' interest. Teaching writing comes with its own set of difficulties, including spelling, punctuation, and handwriting. Games and creative writing prompts are most useful here, as they encourage creative use of English and can be used to easily spot and correct errors. I have certainly learned to never underestimate the usefulness of classroom games!
