Unit 8 was about teaching productive skills. The two productive skills are speaking and writing. From this unit I learnt the difference between fluency and accuracy. Accuracy focuses on producing correct language while fluency concentrates on allowing the students to experiment and be creative with the language. Accuracy and fluency both carries equal importance when speaking and writing. There are three speaking activities done in the classroom, they are controlled activities, guided activities and creative communication. Furthermore, when teaching a class a teacher can encourage a student to talk by creating a comfortable environment so as to make the students relaxed and not afraid to make mistakes. There are also some techniques that the teacher can incorporate in the lesson to encourage the students to talk, some of which are putting students into groups, and to do careful planning. A typical free/creative activity lesson would be the straight arrow ESA lesson. When doing creative writing it should interest the students. Some examples of creative writing are poetry, stories and plays. A teacher should also incorporate games in the classroom, to encourage students to speak and write. There are two types of games, these includes competitive games and co-operation games.
