I learned that it can be harder for students to improve their productive skills than receptive skills. There are many factors that may prevent students from participating in productive skills activities, so encouragement and motivation are needed. Giving students a purpose in speaking or writing activities will help encourage them to try, even if they lack confidence. Making a lesson interesting will also increase student motivation. There are generally two different focuses of speaking activities: accuracy and fluency. It is important that the activity matches the focus, and students should be made aware what the goal is. Since different languages have different writing systems, the students' native language writing system should be considered when teaching writing, as format, punctuation, handwriting, and spelling may cause difficulties. Using games in lessons is a great way to increase motivation and relieve some of the pressure of learning a new language. Simple games with clear instructions can be used to increase student talk time and makes student of all ages more interested in the lesson content.
