This unit was a discussion on the different types of learners you may have when teaching English as a foreign language. There are five groups of beginner learners: absolute beginners, false beginners, adult beginners, young beginners and beginners that do not use the Roman alphabet (in their L1). Teaching young learners can be the most rewarding, but there are also many issues to consider with student motivation and discipline. Teaching Business English, or English for a Specific Purpose (ESP), also has its own challenges and rewards - such as varying groups of English ability but typically a higher financial reward.
