There are many arguments on the number of tenses existing. Many linguists believe that there are only two tenses: present and past. However, from the point of ESL teaching, we should take another approach that states twelve tenses. Talking about the present tense we should distinguish between such aspects as simple, continuous and perfect. Each of these aspects has its own form and a set of usages. Considering these points, it is easy to use these tenses correctly, however, students anyway make typical mistakes which ESL teacher should be able to correct using different techniques, usually during the activate stage.
