I have watched two videos of the same lesson being taught by the same teacher, with a different attitude and lesson plan, to the same group of students. In the first video, the teacher started the lesson without introducing himself or learning the students' names. Therefore, a good rapport wasn't built. The teacher started the lesson by asking questions using vocabulary that students weren't familiar with. When students couldn't answer, the teacher didn't try to elicit or help the students, instead he just moved on to the next question on his list. Throughout the lesson, the teacher did a number of things that should have been avoided such as pointing at students, telling students 'No, that's wrong' when students answered incorrectly, asking questions only to the students whom he knew the name, getting students to do class activities without making sure that the students understood the instructions, etc. In the second lesson, the teacher started by introducing himself and learning the students' names. On the board, the teacher had already written in advance the sentence structure with gaps to be filled to help with elicitation in the Engage phase. The topics of discussion were something that the students were familiar with such as what they can see in a zoo and what they can do in a restaurant. Throughout the lesson, the teacher involved all the students and called on their names in an unpredictable order. The teacher always made sure that the students understood the language and the instruction given before moving on to the next activity. Whenever there was a drill, the teacher did it as a whole-class and also individually. During the Activate phase, the teacher monitored the class and was always available to help students. As a result, the second lesson was effective and successful.
