Teaching pronunciation and phonology is difficult for both the students and the teacher. Phonology is the study and classification of the physical properties of sounds. Phonetics refers to how words are pronounced rather than how they are spelled. Stress, rhythm, and intonation are three key areas of phonology. Intonation is categorized as Rise/Fall, Fall/Rise, Rising, etc. Stress refers to the part of a sentence that is emphasized, i.e. "He did NOT intend on going out." Pronunciation is complicated as it depends on intent. The phonemic alphabet can aid in students learning pronunciation.
