Unit 11 presents the concepts of teaching receptive and productive skills. This lesson specifically details receptive skills. A receptive skill is a skill which enables students to receive information from a source, either written or verbal. By its nature, written information is easier to digest as the words remain fixed on the page for students to refer back to if necessary to further comprehension. Verbal information by contrast is temporally finite meaning that students must comprehend the information in real-time. People read or listen for a variety of reasons, mostly to attain contextually relevant information pertaining to the topic that is being digested. Reading material must be chosen carefully both to elicit excitement through variety and as well to match the English literacy of the class being taught. Verbal information likewise must match the level of comprehension of the class. As well, a teacher may employ slow talking and careful enunciation to maximize understanding from the class.
