This Unit discusses the receptive skills as reading and listening. The reasons and motives for reading and listening are for a purpose - in order to achieve a particular goal or for entertainment - in order to do something we enjoy. It is stated that we should not only read and listen with out eyes and ears, but our mind should be able to grasp words`overall meaning. Some of the special skills we employ while reading or listening are predictive skills, scanning, skimming, detailed information and deduction from context. Some of the problems students face while reading and listening are the length of a sentence, the length of a word and also the unfamiliar words. The ways of approaching these difficulties are through pre-teaching vocabulary, careful selection of texts, interesting topics and engaging the students, giving them tasks which are realistically achievable.
