There are 4 types of skills when it comes to learning English language. Receptive skills, reading and listening, and productive skills, speaking and writing. This unit covered the 2 receptive skills, reading and listening. There are 2 main reasons why people engage in reading or listening: for a purpose and for entertainment. Reading or listening for a purpose would happen when someone needs directions, or when he or she needs, for example, to follow instructions in order to achieve something. If the reason is for entertainment, people might perform reading or listening in order to listen to music, watch a movie, etc. The teacher should take into consideration different aspects when thinking about planning a good lesson. The topics should be of interest to the students and should be varied, in order to engage everybody. The unit also gave an example of a Patchwork scheme used for practicing listening and writing.
